SWEET SAVAGE: Killing Time CD...killer guitarist, killer songs. CHECK AUDIO. Metallica covered!

Sweet Savage - 1996 comeback album from the infamous NWOBHM group that recorded the all-time classic "Killing Time" back in the early 80s, which was later made semi-famous as a Metallica cover version. This album remains true to the style that made them a name and kicks off with their own re-recorded version of the title track. Lots of these tracks were written in the early 80s I think. Overall it does have an updated sound with heavy bite to it ala Megadeth or Metallica.

"Killing Time" by legendary Irish NWOBHM band Sweet Savage! This one finds the band rerecording some of their better known moments from the past, polishing up some compositions from yesteryear which never saw the light of day at the time, and pounding home some brand new compositions to boot!
Although the bands sound has been upgraded for modern audiences they also manage to remain true to their 80's roots and the album's a surprising success.
Includes the song that Metallica have covered twice in their releases (B side singe + Garage double CD)
================================================
This song is called Killing Time by the NWOBHM band Sweet Savage. It is more popularly done by Metallica. This song was released in 1981 and can be found on a couple of Metallica bootlegs and what not.During their short run in the NWOBHM heyday they were considered a hot property and great things were predicted for them. However, they were unable to secure the record deal they desired, and with Vivian Campbell's departure, the band folded.
Sweet Savage must have been a hell of a band 22 years ago or so...a few NWOBHM singles and Friday Rock show appearances put them in a league with the first generation Def Leppard, Iron Maiden, AngelWitch, Saxon, Witchfynde etc. Guitarist Viv Campbell was obviously talented, as he and the band ripped through "Eye of the Storm", "Prospector of Greed", the title track and the like. SS never made it past the 7 inch single back in the day, but managed to create an almost legendary legacy to this day, with Metallica covering one of their tunes and Viv going on to star in Dio, Whitesnake and the current Leppard line up.
Now it's a new millenium and Sweet Savage have apparently reformed after renewed interest following the Metallica cover.
In Campbell's place is Simon McBride, who is at least 15 years younger than his band mates...and who plays a scorching six sting, not without a Michael Schenker / Jeff Kollman influence.
McBride is definitely a player to watch out for. I would bet in a few years Sweet Savage will return to the history books, but Simon McBride will be a star.
Anyway, the music. Having all of the classic Sweet Savage songs together on one disc is certainly a treat, and McBride's playing certainly doesn't take anything away from the original style.
----------------------------------------------------------
Sweet Savage was one of the more promising bands from the legendary New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) scene in the early 80's, but like a lot of that era's promising bands they never managed to make the jump to stardom like Iron Maiden and Saxon did. This, despite boasting a truly impressive guitar talent in Vivian Campbell, who would go on to success with Dio, Whitesnake and Def Leppard.
The UK band (they're from Northern Ireland, actually) released a few singles in the 80's, one of which ("Killing Time") was later covered by Metallica, but never put together a full album. The albums you're looking at now - Killing Time - is actually a collection of older songs (most written circa 1983) that was recorded by a 90's incarnation of the band, which obviously did not include Vivian Campbell. The remaining original members are all present, however and despite the very digital production, these songs are all solid NWOBHM. They stick with their vintage set list, so this is still worthwhile to those curious about this band's history.
