John Waite (born John Charles Waite, 4 July 1952, Lancaster, Lancashire, England) is a rock singer. He was the lead vocalist for the bands The Babys and Bad English. As a solo artist, he scored a #1 hit in the United States with "Missing You" in 1984.
Waite first came to attention as the lead singer and bassist of The Babys, a British group which had moderate chart success and a solid following for their concert tours. Over the course of five years, the Babys produced five albums ending with the final album On the Edge in October 1980, after which the group broke up.

Waite subsequently launched his solo career with his 1982 debut album Ignition, which produced the hit single "Change", written by Holly Knight and later included on the Vision Quest soundtrack.

His next album, No Brakes, resulted in international attention due to the hit single "Missing You" www.youtube.com/watch?v=FkExjeUSCcQ&feature=related which went to No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. Two more singles followed, including "Tears" which was a Top 10 hit on the Billboard Mainstream Rock charts.

The next album Mask of Smiles followed in 1985, and another single "If Anybody Had a Heart" was released from the soundtrack of the 1986 film About Last Night..., starring Demi Moore. In 1987, "Rover's Return" was released with the single "These Times Are Hard For Lovers". Waite would have another soundtrack appearance in 1990 from Days of Thunder with "Deal for Life", written by Martin Page and Bernie Taupin.

In 1988, Waite joined former Babys bandmates Jonathan Cain and Ricky Phillips along with Neal Schon from Journey and drummer Deen Castronovo, to form the supergroup Bad English.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the greatest,
I think that No Brakes is one of the best albums of John Waite. It is full of energy and emotion. People that like "Missing you" should listen to the album before buying it. The rest of the songs have a little more energy....

5.0 out of 5 stars NO BRAKES is one of the lost gems of rock 'n roll. Overwhelmed by the 800 lb. gorilla that is "Missing You" are several incredible tracks, like the follow-up hits "Tears" and "Dark Side of the Sun" and the "Missing You" B-side, "For Your Love", all of them passionate rockers, a side of Mr. Waite's musical personality sorely missing lately. The man used to rock. One may quibble a bit with the oblique quality of several lyrics, but that didn't keep "Missing You" from it's place in pop history.

5.0 out of 5 stars Long out-of-print masterpiece,
This is one of those records that I have loved through all of the weird phases of my life. It has found a permanent spot in my turntable. A true classic by an artist who has continually put out quality material as a member of the Babys and later solo...

5.0 out of 5 stars "No Brakes" is a great album. Give it a listen.,
John Waite occupied a niche in the music scene of the early 1980s. "Missing You" continues to receive airplay while "Tears" and "Euroshima" are favorites of John Waite devotees. This is nothing more than ear candy, but it's oh, so good!

5.0 out of 5 stars
I'd heard some Babys & the single Missing You, But 3 years after the release of No Brakes (circa 88), a friend lent it to me & it blew me away. The other songs are Rockier.Saturday night's a good,up tempo opener & I love the last 4 Trax.
Missing You is still a Fave - with all it's images of the time.
This album turned me into a John Waite Fan - 'Nuff said.
