"Misunderstood" (Self-produced; 2003)
Wow. Netherlands-based Morgana-X's four track self-produced EP "Misunderstood" was quite a nice surprise. In fact, it is one of the best surprises in the nearly four years that I've been afforded the opportunity to critique various metal bands from around the globe.

Morgana-X's progressive leanings are not of the garden variety. Rather, Morgana-X are symphonic without being overbearing, progressive without being too technical, experimental without being too weird. I instantly recognized a lot of mid- to late-'80s Rush influences in the way that the band balances all the instruments especially on the last track "Bad Religion." Vocalist Eddy Borremans doesn't sound a lick like Geddy Lee however.

"Misunderstood" was a joy to listen to; it will be featured in my future listening choices when progressive rock/metal is my mood of the moment. In fact, the four tracks featured on "Misunderstood" are not enough to satisfy my appetite to hear more. I am eagerly awaiting more material from Morgana-X.

Not to be confused with the Italians, this American indie band offers a blend of progessive rock and metal that is very melodic with influences of RUSH and DREAM THEATER. A rare indie release from 1998, this is one of three released by this New York band and an excellent addition to your collection. Disc and inserts are in mint condition.

Their first (and last), self-titled release was completed at the end of 1993. The album consists of an eclectic mix of styles from rock, to electronic, to jazz. It's even difficult for reviewers to describe:

"Way way back in 82' I was a total and utter metal head! Long and hard did I seek the hallowed genre, and many times and often, was looked upon with contempt and even amusement when I entered our local vinyl store seeking albums even then, were deemed obscure and rare!
I usually had to do the dreaded - order and wait! And this album was no exception! I waited and waited for this baby let me tell you! It took effing ages to get to me in fact!
The usual outcome from the above process was an obscure album from an obscure band which due to not being able to pre-hear it, usually left me stuck with a slab of vinyl which was rubbish, and because I had ordered it, expensive rubbish!
