As the title implies, former Judas Priest frontman Rob Halford has returned--to his roots, if not his senses. After Fight and Two, Halford's post-Priest experiments, it was the singer's career that seemed to need a little resurrection. Hence this (he claims) largely autobiographical, often strangely nostalgic trip down metal's memory lane. That Halford's black-leather sensibility extends beyond his couture is immediately apparent; the crunching, occasionally modern rhythms (Ray Chindeau on bass, Bobby Jarzombek on drums) and twin guitar assault (Patrick Lachman and Mike Chlasciak) offer a familiar metal landscape of thundering riffs and rapid-fire, diddly-squeak solos for Halford to unleash his ungodly howl upon, with the just the odd ballad (the touching "Silent Screams") to shift the mood from anxious/angry to melancholy/angry. Fellow fading metal merchant Bruce Dickinson even drops by on "The One You Love to Hate" (self-esteem problems, fellas?) to swap some venom.

Basically the recipe is a load of British 80s Heavy Metal, a load of German 80s Heavy Metal and a load of American 80s Heavy Metal. Translated into some well known bands that Crystal Eyes are proud to call influences we would end up somewhere around Judas Priest, Accept, Iron Maiden, Dio, Helloween, Saxon, Riot, 80s Black Sabbath, Rage, Manowar, Running Wild and a bunch of slightly softer bands from the 80s.

"Way way back in 82' I was a total and utter metal head! Long and hard did I seek the hallowed genre, and many times and often, was looked upon with contempt and even amusement when I entered our local vinyl store seeking albums even then, were deemed obscure and rare!
I usually had to do the dreaded - order and wait! And this album was no exception! I waited and waited for this baby let me tell you! It took effing ages to get to me in fact!
The usual outcome from the above process was an obscure album from an obscure band which due to not being able to pre-hear it, usually left me stuck with a slab of vinyl which was rubbish, and because I had ordered it, expensive rubbish!

PERSIAN RISK Ridin' High (1983 UK Neat 7" b/w Hurt You, picture sleeve NEAT24)

Persian Risk formed in 1979 in England by Phil Campbell who has played in Motorhead and Lemmy now for over two decades. Dudes a total hero.
The band made headway by contributing the aforementioned Calling For You to the "Heavy Metal Heroes Vol.2" compilation (Heavy Metal Records, 1982) and also the Ridin' High b/w Hurt You 7" single through Neat, which earned Risk their strongest reviews yet. Lovely back cover photo the way the band looks wearing spikes and leather... cool in a 1983 sorta way. For the die hard early Iron Maiden fan this is not all that far off. The guitar playing is great. Campbell plays and chugs away exactly the way one would want one to in the early metal days with his killer hook riffs, and a solo on "hurt you" that reminds me of some fast Eddie Clark noodles. No wonder Lemmy chose Phil for the Motorhead sound! The main riff in "hurt you" also has a Riot Influence. Cool nwobhm stuff that most metal heads rifle right past when taking the headbanging journey into heaviness.

1984's Burning Star was the debut album from legendary underground metal band Helstar. Helstar was one of a number of American power metal bands that surfaced in the early to mid eighties that were highly influenced by the NWOBHM movement.
