Rising out of the ruins of the Pennsylvania metalcore band Boywunder and featuring Jesse Smith, former drummer of ZAO, this is radio rock. (The Julian Theory, Filter, Fuel and Placebo). The 5th track, The Capricious is very driving, and the band lets their hardcore backgrounds shine through a bit in it. I suggest that anyone who likes good positive poppy rock like you would hear on the radio, to check out this album. If your into the radio rock sound, you will love the underwater. I think they are going to blow up and be huge in time. Listen to them, and like them now, so when they get big you can stop liking them, and you can make fun of the kids who discovered them on MTV.

Event ain't just another prog metal band. Scratching at the Surface is the disc which will make people take notice. Opening track "Make Your Way" has a style more in line with early Nine Inch Nails or clones like Filter, though much better. "Under My Skin" sounds like a dead ringer for King's X. "Someone" is more laid back, but still adventurous and dark. "One Simple Fall" kicks in with a crunchy stutter groove--and the rest of the disc is just as diverse and different. Once again, vocalist Dan Duzan operates perfectly within Event's song structures. Only on the Mike Patton-influenced "Won't Come Loose" does he break out a little, but his superior vocal hooks are what holds Scratching at the Surface together and helps make them one of the most important bands in rock.

The band teeters on the edge of both the mellow and heavy side of rock; not a heavy metal band they have stuff that's pretty heavy and stuff that mellows right out. The band attributes their musical inspiration to the likes of Alice in Chains, Sevendust, Incubus and even Days of the New. With mellow songs such as "Leaving California" — and a much more vast collection of harder songs such as "Seven," the group easily pulls off the gap between hard and soft with the help of Thulin's experienced and melodic vocal work.
