Formed in the summer of 1997 by the Engman brothers (Johan and Mattias) Hatework (under the name Soulgrinder) arose from the ashes of Cease to exist and Anchorhead which had booth been but to sleep. Later that year they were joined by longtime friend and drummer of Berserk Markel Månson on vocals. The line-up was completed by Fredrik Sjöstedt on bass.

After a while the need for a second guitarist became to obvious and Mia Karlsson joined to fill the empty spot. Due to some problems between members Fredrik quit the band in the spring of 1998 and a replacer was quickly found in Mauri Jofré. Later that year Mia quit the band and the band continued with only one guitarist.

Dark Angel rules,there music is pure fight music,it pumps you up. This album is their best album. Every song will knock you out. You have Merciless Death on this album which is also on Darkness Descends. Don Doty's voice is amazing. The best song on the album is Welcome To The Slaughter House.

Despite two decent record deals (this album was put out through Peaceville, the second album God's Gift through Chrysalis), England's Toranaga made only a small splash during their career. I always found the raw energy of this debut superior. The band played with an early Bay Area feel, though heavily rooted in traditional NWOBHM, conveyed through the melodic guitars. Vocalist Mark Duffy has a raspy vocal style which reminds me of early German speed metal, perhaps a dash of Exodus.

The Dark is the second full length album released by Metal Church. It was also the last album in which the line-up of Wayne, Vanderhoof, Arrington, Wells and Erickson performed, until 1999's Masterpeace album. This album talks of dark themes, such as assassination, death, struggle, and rituals (for example, the lyrics from "Line of Death" were most likely based on Libyan hostilities in the Gulf of Sidra). One song from this album, "Watch the Children Pray", turned into the band's first music video. This album is one of their most critically and commercially successful albums to date. The album was dedicated to the late Cliff Burton of Metallica fame.
