Black Utopia is the third solo album by keyboard player Derek Sherinian. In addition to the returning members Zakk Wylde, Simon Phillips and Steve Lukather, three new musicians joined Sherinian: bass guitarist Billy Sheehan and guitarists Yngwie Malmsteen – with whom Sherinian had toured in 2001 – and Al Di Meola. "One of the highlights of my career was flying to Miami to produce Yngwie, and the next day Al Di Meola - all for my record!" The song "Axis Of Evil", (co-written with KISS drummer Eric Singer), has Zakk Wylde and Yngwie Malmsteen in a guitar duel. Black Utopia was the beginning of an ongoing collaboration with drummer Brian Tichy, and album cover artist Mattias Noren. Black Utopia is Sherinian's best selling solo record to date.
In Japan, the cover of Black Utopia was altered to remove the cross in the title; Derek Sherinian commented that the cross "meant nothing" and was added for aesthetic purposes.
The track "Nightmare Cinema" is named after an alternate ego used during encore performances by Dream Theater. of which Sherinian is a former member.

Verdict: A classy mixture of Prog, Metal and AOR

Pedestrians Of Blue consists of Norwegians Johannes Stole (singer/keyboards) and Torfinn Sirnes (guitar). Johannes is a member of Orange Crush. POB is an outlet for Johannes heavier rock side, with the band describing their music as a mixture of Queensryche, Toto & Metallica. Circles Of Butterflies is POB's first demo.

On opener, "Father & Son", a church style organ beginning gives way to something heavier. At first you think Metallica, then you think Queensryche. Imagine what would happen if Metallica were more keyboard orientated. A classical section highlights the band's progressive aspirations.

Gentle modern synth rhythms introduce "Crossing" before the guitars take over. The closest description is that it is similar to a slow Metallica track. The programmed drums intrude somewhat on the overall sound. The guitar sound is cleaner than Metallica and this is where the Queensryche comparisons come in.

This is an excellent CD for those who enjoy great rock musicians and singers performing full-bore, melodic songs. As you would expect the guitar playing is supreme, the band is over the top and tight, the singer is a REAL singer and the production is excellent. This CD is much more listenable then a lot of progressive rock, such as Symphony X and Dream Theater. If you want great musicians playing songs that you can enjoy than this is an excellent choice. As great as the band is, the singer ensures that you get your moneys worth as he is up to the task and has what sounds like a well trained voice.

More power, more prog, more great songs! This is what the 2003 Last Tribe album has to offer to all the metal heads that enjoyed the first album of this Swedish band lead by guitarist Magnus Karlsson (Midnight Sun). There is also a new drummer around none other than ex-Flower Kings Jaime Salazar. Absolutely great stuff

Not to be confused with the Italians, this American indie band offers a blend of progessive rock and metal that is very melodic with influences of RUSH and DREAM THEATER. A rare indie release from 1998, this is one of three released by this New York band and an excellent addition to your collection. Disc and inserts are in mint condition.

About the Artist
Having toured the world as David Lee Roth’s band and appeared on his "Diamond Dave" CD, the Hideous Sun Demons will release their self-titled debut album of all instrumental tracks.
Formed by longtime Roth drummer, Ray Luzier (now with Korn and previously with Jonathan Davis and the SFA, Army of Anyone, Jake E. Lee, Stone Temple Pilots, David Lee Roth, The Nixons, Tracy G, Billy Sheehan), the band began to take shape when Japanese guitarist, Toshi Hiketa, was brought on board. DLR bassist, James Lomenzo, became interested in the project and the three players began to write material together.
