honest, hard rock album that was characterized by LeSte's laconic vocal
style.

*BARREN CROSS: State of
Control [This Christian rock group from California was formed by guitarist
Ray Parris
and drummer Steve Whitaker in 1981. Enlisting the services of Jim Laverde
(bass) and Mike
Lee (vocals). Lyrically, the band explored themes such as abortion, drug
abuse and terrorism,
but explained rather than simply condemned these issues. Later releases
saw the band afford
greater use of melody, but without compromising their ideals or striving
for commercial
recognition. This, their third album was released in the summer of 1989.
Mike Lee's voice still
impresses me. This album shows the band at their peak. I do not believe
they ever surpassed
this album. Sonically, it was the best of the trilogy. Maybe the best Christian
Metal album ever?]

*BLUE OYSTER CULT: Secret
Treaties [One of the greatest early metal albums. Period. Why? The songs,
culled
from the bizarre Bouchard/Pearlman "Imaginos" song cycle concept, flow
into each other to
form a demented, horrifying stream of consciousness approach. This creepy
approach has
undoubtedly influenced later bands in the genre. The songs themselves are
eclectic and tight,
from the straightforward heavy guitar riffs of "Career of Evil" to the
proto-punk of
"Dominance and Submission", and the downright chilling epic, keyboard-heavy
ballad
"Astronomy" (later covered by Metallica). Buck Dharma's signature guitar
soloing approach
finally fully materializes on this album, and the keyboard arrangements
show that non-
guitar melodic instrumentation can be vital in creating moods, even in
heavy metal. Besides,
"Harvester of Eyes" has a superb guitar harmony line. Even the album packaging
rules. This
is an essential Blue Oyster Cult album. And that's that. Original vinyl
copy.

*TOMMY BOLIN: Tommy Bolin
was a highly versatile progressive rock guitarist who branched into fusion
with
considerable success. In 1968 he formed Ethereal Zephyr, later shortened
to Zephyr. Signed to
Probe Records, their debut release was a US Top 50 album in 1969. He then
formed the
jazz/fusion group Energy with Billy Cobham. The latter then asked Bolin
to play guitar on his
Spectrum album in 1973 (which reputedly inspired Jeff Beck to try his hand
at fusion). Having
become a 'name' guitarist he was asked to replace Domenic Troiano in the
James Gang. Bolin
performed on their 2 albums. He was hired in 1975 by Deep Purple to replace
the departed
Richie Blackmore. He subsequently wrote and co-wrote many songs for the
English hard-rock
group's Come Taste The Band. During the early stages of that band's dissolution
in late 1975
Bolin went solo, recording the critically acclaimed "Teaser" and, the following
year, "Private
Eyes" for Columbia Records In December 1976, Bolin was found dead in a
Miami hotel room,
the victim of a drugs overdose.

*BUDGIE: Never Turn Your
Back On A Friend [This hard rock group was formed in Cardiff in Wales,
by John
Burke Shelley (bass, acoustic guitar, lead vocals) and Ray Phillips (drums)
in 1968. Joined by Tony
Bourge (lead guitar, vocals), the trio established a substantial following
on the south Wales college and
club circuit and were subsequently signed to MCA Records. Plying their
trade in a basic, heavy riffing
style, the standard was set with the first single, charmingly entitled
'Crash Course To Brain Surgery'. The
vagaries of early 70s British album artwork were typified by the treatment
given to Budgie's releases
depicted ludicrous images of budgerigars variously posed, dressed as a
fighter pilot (staring nobly out into
the far horizon), a Nazi Gestapo officer, or as a squadron of fighter budgies
flying in formation, tearing
into combat. This is the original gatefold sleeve release (1973).

their debut the following year. Torien's flamboyant persona attracted comparisons
with David Lee

*CINDERELLA: Long Cold Winter
[This Philadelphia, USA-based band was signed Cinderella on PolyGram
Records by Jon Bon Jovi's recommendation after he witnessed a particularly
wild Philadelphia club
gig. The band's AC/DC + Aerosmith style proved popular, with raucous live
shows helping to make
'Nobody's Fool' a number 13 hit, as the debut album climbed to number 3
in the US charts. Long
Cold Winter established a more individual sound, as Cinderella adopted
a classy blues-rock style
that ideally suited Keifer's throaty tones; 'Gypsy Road', 'Don't Know What
You Got (Till It's
Gone)' (US number 12 in September 1988) and 'Coming Home' continued their
ascent

CIRCUS OF POWER: Emerging
from the gutter of New York's late 80s Lower East Side, this heavily tattooed
quartet delivered a unique and uncompromising brand of blues-based heavy
metal. Alex
Mitchell's paint-stripping vocals coupled with Ricky Beck-Mahler's grungy
guitar riffs were
the band's trademarks, while Gary Sunshine (bass) and Ryan Maher (drums)
provided the
necessary ammunition in the rhythm section. Distilling influences such
as the Dictators,
AC/DC, Motorhead and white blues guitarists including Johny Winter and
Rick Derringer,
they purveyed solid, raunchy rock 'n' roll, underpinned by a keen sense
of melody and
dynamics. The lyrical subject matter concerned itself with 'wrong side
of the street'
narratives, reflecting their origins in the drug-infested Alphabet City
community they call
home. With three albums for RCA Records behind them and a successful support
slot on
Black Sabbath's 1990 tour, they remained relatively unknown outside their
native New York.
RCA consequently dropped the group, which may have been a rash decision,
particularly in
the light of Columbia Records' decision to step in with a contract.

* DEF LEPPARD: On
Through the Night [Canadian copy (first album]. £7
*DEF LEPPARD:
Pyromania. [The best Leppard LP. It defined the cutting edge of the burgeoning
cock-rock
revolution and launched five tracks that still get airplay on classic rock
stations. Of those
five, three ("Rock Rock," "Photograph," and "Rock of
Ages") are superb examples of
what arena hormone rock should be. Sadly, two similarly rockin' tunes,
"Stagefright" and
"Action! Not Words," didn't become radio staples but are equally
barn-burning odes to
gettin' some. The other two radio-friendly tracks, "Too Late for Love"
and "Foolin',"
don't approach the excellence of the their companions but are still pretty darn
okay]. £6
DEF LEPPARD: Hysteria [Women, Rocket, Animal, Love Bites,
Pour Some Sugar On Me, Armageddon It. Part of
the appeal of Def Leppard's brand of rock is that their best tunes are informed
by an
infectious pop influence. Of course, a slew of rockin' riffs, unique
guitar-vocal harmonies,
more than a touch of whammy bar, sparkling production by Mutt Lange, and a
beefed-up
drum kit didn't exactly hurt, either]. £3
*David DELAROSSA: Nothing'
