SACRED
CHILD: S / T [Black Dragon Records. Test pressing with press release! The
original singer of the band
was David Reece (ex Accept), but he quit the band to pursue a solo carrer.
Musically speaking,
Sacred Child evolves in a style close to melodic Heavy rock. Astrid Young the
singer, (the sister
of Neil Young !), has a beautiful voice. Chuck Rosa proves to be a very gifted
guitarist (he is
also a well known producer! He has worked with bands like LA Guns, Vinnie
Vincent, Lazz
Rockit). Songs like "Wagons of fire", "Electric
Thunder" or "Alive in steel" sound very fresh

SAD CAFÉ: Misplaced Ideals [Long before Paul Young gained
notoriety as one of the lead vocalists for Mike &
The Mechanics, he had a critically acclaimed group known as Sad Cafe. Based in
Manchester, England,
Sad Cafe released 10 albums between 1974 and 1992. Those included two key albums
for A&M,
"Misplaced Ideals" and "Facades". (The U.S. release of
"Misplaced Ideals" was actually a compilation of
tunes from their 3 releases on RCA U.K.; "Fanx Tara", "Hungry
Eyes" and "Misplaced Ideals".)
Included are the hit singles "Run Home Girl", "Babylon". Sad
Cafe broke up, with Young moving on to

inception in 1983, losing

*SHOGUN:
S/T [Shogun was formed in 1985 by Alan Marsh (Tokyo Blade singer) and Danny
Gwilym
(Chinatown). This album was "lightened up" due to commercial pressure
but is probably the most
representative of what Danny and Alan had planned (Songs "Too late for the
hunter", "Burning
down the night", "Only the lonely"). The album featured some
great songs and the twin guitars of
Danny and Toby Martin (ex - Marseille) . This album was shortly followed by the
release of a
single "High in the sky" which got the band onto the radio and a video
spot on National TV (The
Chart Show). The single was not on any of the Shogun albums Line-up:Alan Marsh

*SHOGUN: 31 Days [1987saw the band
engage ex Tokyo Blade players Andy Wrighton (Bass), Steve Pearce
(Drums) and sign to JET records before releasing their second album (so called
because the album
tracks were written and recorded in one month). JET released a single,
"Cloak and Dagger" in 7" and
12" red vinyl at the same time. The band featured yet another line up for
1988 with keyboards (Andy
Higgins) after the departure of Toby Martin. Andy Robbins (another ex-Tokyo
Blade man) was brought
in on the bass and the band was at it's rockingest best when supporting
Meatloaf's UK tour of that year.
Late 1988 and the band went to Los Angeles in late '88 to re-mix the ballad
"Voices from the heart".
The job was done by producer Bob Ezrin (Pink Floyd & Rod Stuart producer) at
"One on one" studios
in Hollywood and was released as a 7" and 12" single. The 31 days
album is available with either
version of this track depending on the albums release date.A few months after
the Meatloaf tour, the
band parted company with JET Records. The line up disintegrated with Andy
Robbins (Bass) going on
to join the UK band "Skin". Danny and Alan continued to write together
and wrote and recorded 13
tracks which were never released. Shortly after this, the band parted
company with it's management and
Danny and Alan lost contact for a while before coming together again with Andy
Boulton (Tokyo
Blade) to form a new outfit called "Mr. Ice"... Members: Alan Marsh
(Vocals) Danny Gwilym (Guitar)
Toby Martin (Guitar) Andy Wrighton (Bass) Steve Pearce (Drums) Tony Moore

contributed to writing and recording "31 Days" album)]

*Jim STEINMAN: Bad
For Good [Very famous L.P, that features the big talents of Jim Steinman, one of
the
biggest composers and producers of the century. This is a UNIQUE album, the REAL
sequel to
Bat Out of Hell and it has tremendous songs.
Bad For Good: the guitar work Todd Rundgren does on the title track is
“thundering”. The
thunder-like percussion helps the effect too. This is the album’s
signature cut, the sound that
Steinman gets accused of writing and re-writing on successive albums. The lyrics
are strong, the
backing chorale lends just the touch of heavenly vision to the song, and
Steinman himself only has
to resort to vocal trickery several times.
Lost Boys and Golden Girls - This song remains one of Steinman’s most
achingly beautiful
ballads. Extremely radio-friendly, Meat Loaf grabbed this song for the
“official” 1993 sequel, but
I actually prefer the gritty reality of Steinman’s version. A gorgeous
piano here and some nice
vocal arranging for Steinman. Steinman’s version is not as polished as
Meat Loaf’s, but it’s more
real and therefore more
substantive.
Love and Death and An American Guitar - Steinman claims that this spoken word
cut with no
musical accompaniment was meant to be a monologue from yet another musical he
was
developing. Meat Loaf, in concert, claims that Steinman released the album Bad
for Good just
so that he could make sure that this soliloquy saw the light of day. Critics
derided its obvious
influence from Jim Morrison’s rant. Here, the narrator uses an electric
guitar to go on a
murderous rampage before ending in a Poe-like suspenseful moment when the
narrator considers
killing his sleeping parents.
Stark Raving Love - As Steinman shrieks the last syllable, the band explodes
into a brilliant
pop-rock sound. Again, the chorale makes an appearance, as does Todd Rundgren
and Davey
Johnstone on guitars and Max Weinberg on drums.
Out of The Frying Pan (And Into The Fire) - The song is pleasant in and of
itself, Steinman
creates the cabaret/opera/theatrical ambience that Meat Loaf delivers when he
sings.
- Surf’s Up - The lyrics and the melody here both contribute to form a
soothingly gentle but
powerful ballad. Haunting keyboards and a guitarist with too much time and money
on his hands
(presumably Mr. Rundgren again) plays a dazzlingly melodic solo that makes this
song the
hidden gem of the album.
-Introduction/Medley/The Storm - Given his stature at the time, it’s
surprising that Steinman was
able to pull off using the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, but that’s who
appears as the artist
here; Steinman is listed solely as arranger and composer. I would describe this
piece as perhaps
the second movement of something much larger in scale. I find myself hunting for
the theme’s
repetition as a landmark in a very busy
arrangement.
Rock and Roll Dreams Come Through - Finally – the song you heard on the
radio! Meat Loaf
and Steinman each had hits with this. This song is anthemic and mixes the best
of Steinman’s
various formulae to create a rock masterwork. Bad For Good is worth purchasing
simply for
Steinman’s original version of this song. Again, Meat Loaf’s voice
is more powerful, but
Steinman’s original arrangment is more satisfying] £7
* STEALIN
HORSES: S/ T [Arista Records. This album, released in 1988 on the Arista label,
was the first major
release of Wishing Chair's co-founder, Kiya Heartwood and drummer Kopana Terry.
It is
currently out of print (a definite collector's item!). It doesn't fit neatly
into a particular genre,
of course, but we think of it as Arista's answer to Buffalo Springfield, with a
rock and
roll,
folksy edge. Highly produced, radio friendly and extremely listenable, it
features Kiya's songs
and vocals as well as guest appearances by Neil Young, Pete Anderson, Danny
Kortchmar,
Russ Kunkel, the entire Toto team and Waddy Wachtel.] £5

* STEEL VENGEANCE: Prisoners [Black Dragon Records.
Clean melodic metal much like Leatherwolf and
Shok Paris. If true metal is a defining genre then these guys may be considered
"honest
metal". Straight forward non pretentious heavy metal with a melodic classic
influence] £7
STEPPENWOLF: Early Steppenwolf [This is an original -and
very battered- record that came out in '69 and has a
'67 performance of the legendary band that has conned the term "Heavy
Metal" and has created
the hymn "Born To Be Wild". Worth buying just for the song "The
Pusher" which is an
"improvising, jamming, squeezing and shaping a musical thing which lasted
for 20 minutes"!] £7
STEPPENWOLF: Hour of the Wolf ['75 LP]

fool 3 So far away 4 Where do we go
from here 5 Goodnight L.A. 6 Empty streets 7 Stand up and shout 8 Shake the
seven 9 Never
going to lose it 10 Face to face
Members: TERRY BROCK vocals, guitar David Stewart bass, backing vocals Jim
Drummond
drums, percussion, backing vocals Dave 'Munch' Moore keyboards
This is the follow-up album of this Scottish AOR band and was released back in
1987. The
band changed their lead vocalist. The American session-vocalist TERRY BROCK was
their
new and absolutely brilliant lead vocalist, who sounds very much like STEVE
PERRY of
JOURNEY. The music was very close to the classic JOURNEY AOR sound of albums
like
'Frontiers' and 'Escape', 'Raised on radio'. In fact, they sounded more like
JOURNEY than any
other American AOR band that played this style. If you like JOURNEY, you just
can't ignore
this 2nd release of STRANGEWAYS, because the AOR is up there with their American
friends. The first 5 songs are all Classic AOR songs in the best JOURNEY
tradition. "Dance
with somebody" and "Where do we go from here" are the uptempo AOR
rocker. "Only a fool"
and "So far away" are the superb midtempo 80s AOR songs, while
"Goodnight L.A." is a
beautiful AOR ballad that is so close to JOURNEY. This ballad could have easily
been a
number one hit in The States. Nowadays a guy like HUGO is making these kind of
AOR
ballads and the fans love it, not knowing that 12 years ago a band like
STRANGEWAYS did it
so much better on their album 'Native sons'. Also songs "Empty
streets" (uptempo AOR) and
"Face to face" (beautiful semi AOR ballad) are lovely songs that can
not be missed by any
AOR fan. Fans of JOURNEY should have get this album] £12
STRAIGHT
EIGHT: Shuffle And Cut [NWOBHM - New Wave Of British Heavy Metal. Logo Records

sorry, I can't
stop, Powercut, Tonite, When I'm alone with you, Tombstone, On the rebound,
Christine, Will
you love me, Don't turn your back, Satisfied, Only you] £6
* STRIFE:
Back To Thunder [TEST PRESSING. Great cover! Strife formed in 1971 and were
gigging regularly by
the end of that year. In February 1972, they recorded a live album at Wall City
Club at Quaintways,
Chester. It was never released. When an album finally emerged in 1975, it
contained the most popular
numbers from their stage act. They went on to record a second album Back To
Thunder in 1978,
featuring Don Airey on keyboards, Paul H. Ellson - DrumsJohn Reid - Guitar,
VocalsGordon Rowley -
Bass, Vocals. Later on members went on to form NIGHTWING. Songs:
Shockproof, Let me down,
Feel so good, Sky, You are what you are, Red sun Fuel injected overlap, Weary
traveller] £12
STRYPER: Always there for You. [Christian Metal.
Includes LIVE version of "Soldiers Under Command"]
£3
STYX: Pieces Of Eight [Gatefold album with fantastic songs to match
the quality of the cover.
Songs: Great white hope / I’m okay / Sing for the day / The message /
Lords of the ring / Blue collar man
/
Queen of spades / Renegade / Pieces of eight / Aku-aku
Styx’s mixture of powerful hard rock and surprisingly different elements
has reminded many of Queen –
and
not without reason. This is rock opera done the American way. “Great white
hope” starts the album with
surprisingly tough hard/heavy rock, followed by softer, fine “I’m
okay” – and totally different, very
un-
heavy “Sing for the day”. The only hit single from the album,
“Blue collar man (long nights)” deserved its
success. James Young, Dennis DeYoung and Tommy Shaw know how to write melodic,
yet powerful music
that doesn’t respect any ordinary genre limits.] £8
STYX: Kilroy
Was Here [ This is the best Styx album in my opinion! Must have!
Songs: Mr. Roboto / Cold war / Don't let it end / High time / Heavy metal
poisoning / Just get through this
night / Double life / Haven't we been here before / Don't let it end.
It has a sci-fi theme, kind of pocket rock-opera set in the near future,
"Kilroy" tells the story of a world in
which rock-and-roll has been banned and forced underground by an organization
called the Majority for
Musical Morality, which is led by a charismatic politician, Dr. Everett
Righteous. Styx, of course, has been
hassled a bit in the real world by similarly inclined souls who believe that the
group's albums, when played
backward, emit satanic messages. As outlined in the slickly produced, 15-minute
film that began their
concerts, the focus of Righteous' anger is rock star Robert Kilroy (DeYoung).
Framed on a murder charge
by the Majority for Musical Morality and sentenced to a prison ship moored in
Montrose Harbor (a rather
charming tribute to Styx's Chicago-area origins), Kilroy finally escapes by
disguising himself as one of the
Majority's neo-Japanese robots and hustles off to (where else?) the Paradise
Theater, where he makes
contact with a young rock rebel, Jonathan Chance. Kilroy and Chance, the older
and younger generations of
rock, agree that "the modern man" has a "guitar in hand" and
vow, in "Don't Let It End," to fight against Dr.
Righteous
and his repressive thought-police-the goal being "to try to keep
rock-and-roll alive". Aside from
the
politics of all this and the high level of musical craftsmanship involved, what
was interesting about
"Kilroy" was the way DeYoung's theatrical framework heightened Styx's
impact] £7

*SURVIVOR: Vital Signs [The Classic AOR lp of the 80`s!! Every
track here is a winner! Jimi Jamison is just
brilliant here on Vocals and is the highlight on every track. We kick off here
with the wonderful
"I cant hold back" ,Keyboards intro. "high On You" .Another
fine mid paced A.O.R
track.
"The Search is Over" is the beautiful ballad where we have the great
mixture of keys as performed
by the excellent Jim Peterik and Mr Jamisonon vocals. "Popular Girl"
is the rocker and a great one at
that! Perfect blend of keys and guitars. The last 3 tracks on the LP, are just
wonderful! Like I said
earlier, not a filler track at all on this CD/LP. This is a Definite MUST HAVE
in the collection.
A fine collection of AOR tracks from this legendary band! Awesome.]

WILDHEARTS] £6
* TEAZE: One Night Stands ["One Night Stands" was
the third album released by Teaze on the Aquarius Records
label and the debut release for the band on U.S. Capitol Records label. With the
success
of the live album, "Tour Of Japan", the Montreal based band Teaze
became one of the
hottest Canadian bands of the late 70's. For this US debut album all the stops
were
pulled out by the band's management. Myles Goodwyn, from April Wine, was brought
in for production and eight new songs were written by the band members for the
album.
The songs were powerful hard rock numbers with intelligent lyrics and good
choruses.
The album had all right songs to make it a hit but despite that, the timing was
just not
right. Disco was dominating the charts, new wave and punk rock music was
becoming
the current rage] £6

Nordic tundra, through the hall of the Ice King,

shadows and surrounded by an
air of mystery. This army of one endures the harsh blizzards and the death march
of a cold wind that
beckons him to join his adversaries in Hell, but he does not falter. He does not
give up on his
mission.
Songs: sleeping giant, catch a tiger, i'm so proud, tell me lies, military
matters, superhero, wasted, rosie,
thunder.] £12
THE THROBS: The Language Of Thieves and Vagabonds [ Good time

Addiction
10 Ecstasy 11 Strange Behavior. The production team of one-time Alice Cooper
collaborators Bob
Ezrin and Dick Wagner was highly suited to the project, as the band clearly drew
influences from
the sleazier US rock of the early 70s along with later contemporaries such as
Hanoi Rocks.
However, despite some enthusiastic reviews for the record, the ensuing live
shows, which included a
UK tour with Mr. Big they lost their recording deal and after members Ericson

of the country 4. You look so good 5. We're here for a good time 6. Oh,pretty
lady 7. Cold,cold Toronto
8. Long
time.
It goes like this: two million records, a couple dozen hits, sold-out coliseums
across Canada, a Juno
Award (Canada's Grammy) for Band of the Year. Incredibly, one out of every forty
Canadians owns a
copy of Trooper's 6X Platinum album; "Hot Shots"……Strong
harmonies and a frolicking musical
outcrop make Knock 'Em Dead Kid one of Trooper's best works, giving way to three
solid singles and
helping them become an important musical icon in their homeland of Canada. This
album does give fans
a good taste of what the band is made out of, with a blend of both amusing and
subtle music. "We're Here
for a Good Time" is a party-all-night kind of tune, while "Oh, Pretty
Lady" is a truly tasteful ode. "It's
Been a Long Time" is a mild but honest rock song that drifts along
wonderfully] £5

VAVEL: "Vavel" [The Hellenic invasion of 1986 brought a
wave of excellent metal albums/bands. To me the greatest band of Greek metal
with the greatest debut appeared then and it's name was Vavel. These skilled
musicians managed to compose 8 tracks with unique power aesthetic that consist
the 'holy grail' of the Greek Metal offerings. That LP was simply called Vavel
and it is a very tough piece of vinyl to get (nowadays it can be sold for more
than $200) and came with a majestic cover. To everyone's disappointment due to
the bad management and the lack of interest of the record companies that was the
last official effort of Vavel. They had written some more songs for a second LP
but has never seen the light of day and that was the 'swan song' of Vavel, that
disbanded sometime in the early '90s leaving to us the music heritage of songs
like: 'Vavel', 'Fight With Metal', 'Atomic Energy', etc.] $230 or £137 or

David Geffen Company. Release date

When Warrior Soul burst onto the metal scene in early 1990, they were a
powerfully effective
antidote to all the throwaway, pretty-boy, pop-rock bands of the late '80s.
Perfectly fused
viciously potent guitars with thundering rhythms and angry, street-sussed lyrics
to paint a bleak
picture of a decaying urban wasteland. Savaging the establishment with an
intelligence rarely
found in rock, Kory went on the offensive, launching stinging attacks on a
flawed, ineffective
system - hypocritical politicians and dumb-idol, lame-brained rock stars. Kory
sang about fear,
apathy, rejection and the size of the (U.S.) national debt, etc. From the angry
cover of Joy
Division''s Innerzone,to the Children ending-this lp is angry. Kory directs his
anger at everyone
from the population to the l.a.p.d. Songs like the title track and "jump
for joy" seem at times
appologetic at the stance of anger. "Hero" is great, and so are the
other 11 tracks. Track Listing :

WATCHTOWER: Control And Resistance [The most Technical Metal
album on this list. Songs: 1. Instruments of
Random Murder 2. The Eldritch 3. Mayday in Kiev 4. The Fall of Reason
5. Control and Resistance 6. Hidden Instincts 7. Life Cycles 8. Dangerous
Toys
Doug Keyser - bass Ron Jarzombek - guitars Rick Colaluca - drums Alan Tecchio -
vocals
With two extremely innovative prog-metal albums, Watchtower belongs
today to the prime division, the music from these Texas guys remains so
astonishing... Changes of tempos and moods prevail over all the album's tracks,
but all of them are quite different in each separate song in the way
arrangements are made. In the first Instruments of Random Murder the themes
replace one another as if in a caleydoscope. And if the music is, on the whole,
very fast, there are lots of unexpected atonal fragments, including simply
fantastic "jazzy" guitar-solo in the middle. The musicians possess the
highest possible professional level. Unlike Jason McMaster with his incredibly
low voice (the original singer), Teccio sings on the other hand in a
high-pitched key. Though, he doesn't want to do it too high, which is right, but
has to count with the pressure from the other band memders. The Eldritch is
structurally very close to the opener, but it begins with a short drums solo. A
beautiful guitar is not "jazzy" here, but it plays a high-speed
symphonic part as cello. The third one Mayday in Kiev (reflections about
Chernobyl's catastrophe) begins fast, but the middle of the song is completely
dominated by piles of various electric and acoustic guitar classic arrangements.
Some bass/guitar themes may call in mind Rush, but only slightly. The Fall of
Reason is a more mid-tempo composition with interplays between electric and
acoustic rhythm-guitars, with a long, quite outstanding part led by solo-bass
(!) The Fall sounds sometimes more symphonic than metallic. The title-song
begins with a nice interplay between bass and semi-acoustic guitar. After a
short keyboard (surely) passage the song moves into a faster and heavier realm.
Lots of various bass and guitars solos, excellent jazz-like drumming, and an
impressive vocalist. Hidden Instinct opens slowly by semi-acoustic guitar, but
on the whole, this one structurally resembles tracks 1 and 2. As usual, simply a
dazzle of fast themes and solos from a super guitarist and, of course, from a
super bassist. And yes, the drumming... There is no monotony at all. Life Cycles
is a soft and symphonic song on the album. It contains some ballad-like
fragments, with other parts in the vein of traditional classic prog. The second
half is fast and heavy with, again, a beautiful "jazzy" guitar solo.
Dangerous Toys closes the album. This quiet direct techno-thrash song is more
typical for the first Watchtower's works.
One of the most adventurous,
complex and intricate albums of the genre, "Control and Resistance"
contains diverse arrangements, that are performed with a fantastic virtuosity on
the part of each musician] £12

WAYSTED: Save Your Prayers [ Another Excellent Hard Rock /

player has created in his long career. Paul Chapman is playing the guitar (he
was also playing with UFO).
This fantastic LP features classics like: Walls fall Down the LP opener (with
the AC/DC-ish elements.
That one is followed by the excellent Black N Blue, where we hear Danny Vaughn
(famous of his
co-
operation with DOA and later on with Tyketto singing wonderfully well as
expected. Paul Chapman also
does well here on guitars and this also happens on Singing to the Night , that
is full of cool melodies. The
killer track is definitely Heaven Tonight (different version),. Plenty of
wonderful keys and very A.O.R in
structure and delivery. Awesome track! Mr Vaughn shines through on this track!
Another cool track is
How the West was won .Good mixture of Keys and guitar and it comes as well as
Hell Comes Home,
Hero’s Die Young, How The West was won, The LP finishes off with ballad So
Long. Nice ending to a
perfect LP. Vaughn sings wonderfully well and the songs are all very good! Fine
mix of keys and guitars
A definite mid 80`s classic. Once this LP was finished, they toured with IRON

Harris is a big fan of this band and Pete Way]. Warrior cover. Same LP as

* Michael WHITE: S/T [Here is the KERRANG -JUNE 1987- review:
(ATLANTIC 81753-1 import)
KKKKK
A debut album from a new and formidable solo talent that creeps around very
serious Led Zeppelin
territory. The record sleeve shows Michael posing a la Robert Plant circa 'Song
Remains The Same'.
And his vocals? Well, lets just say that they sound like early unreleased
Zeppelin outtakes! If I hadn't
had the bebefit of knowing it was actually Michael White.Believe me, the
comparison is unreal.
Recorded in Munich, although Michael I understand is American (apparently, he
used to play in a
covers band called The White who specialised in a Zeppelin tribute with
excellent financial results),
this record is actually very entertaining and musically extraordinarily
competent. However, at times
the Plant-Zeppelin influence becomes so dominant that matters tend to get rather
out of hand.
The track 'Matriarch', for example, is so similar to Zep's funky backslapping
'The Ocean' (on their
'Houses Of The Holy' LP) that I'd swear it's the same tune with a new lyrical
arrangement. "One Good
Turn' emerges as an acoustic based ditty with heavy orchestration, a trait used
to massive effect by
Zeppelin on the 'Led Zep III' album and, in some respects, carried right through
to the mega-triumph
of 'Kashmir'. Elsewhere, you've got every possible Plant-esqueyelp, squel and
'Ooh yeah, babe', fat
guitar very much in the cut'n'thrust style of Jimmy Page and massive drumsin the
Bonham mould. An
intensely inviting sound alright, and one I'm actually quite chuffed about if
truth be told. The songs,
despite the niggling influences, are superb multi-layered affairs, benefiting
from unusual exotic
arrangements and superior musicianship (ex-WASP guitarist Randy Piper is also
participating).
5 K's then for having the guts to go for it in such an outrageously
controversial fashion!] £11
* Snowy WHITE: White Flames [Snowy White played lead guitar on
Peter Green's In The Skies (1979) and in 1983
his Bird of Paradise single -which is included in this album- reached the top
ten (no. 6). He joined
the Pink Floyd as an auxiliary musician and played the Floyd's Animals tour in
England, Europe
and Los Angeles. His acoustic guitar solo on Pigs On The Wing was featured on
the eight track
version of the Animals album. With the Pink Floyd heavily engaged in the studio
on The Wall,
Snowy joined Thin Lizzy for a couple of years...Amazingly, the edgy rock of
[Thin] Lizzy, the
trippy melodies of [Pink] Floyd, and the R&B guitar licks all coalesce into
one unique and
engaging solo album."] £7
The Christian rock band Whiteheart was formed in 1982 by
singer Steve Green, guitarist Dann Huff, bassist Gary Lunn, keyboardists Mark
Gersmehl and Billy Smiley, and drummer David Huff, most of the members alumni of
Bill Gaither's group. After debuting with a self-titled effort issued on the
Home Sweet Home label, Green exited the line-up, and was replaced by vocalist
Scott Douglas for 1984's Vital Signs; another roster swap exchanging Dann Huff
for guitarist Gordon Kennedy again shook up the Whiteheart sound just prior to
1985's Hotline. The remaining Huff brother, David, split soon after its release,
as did Douglas; new vocalist Rick Florian and drummer Chris McHugh were
installed in time for 1986's Don't Wait for the Movie, the last Whiteheart
record to feature Gary Lunn.
With the addition of new bassist Tommy Sims for
1987's Emergency Broadcast, only Gersmehl and Smiley remained from the group's
original line-up.

* WHITE LIGHTNING: …As Midnight Approaches [After the
eventual demise of Surrey's popular STATIC in the early months of 1983, mainman
Noel Jones decided to form a band. Eventually, a bassist was recruited in the
form of Richard Max Goddard, a talented individual who had previously assisted
the activities of MOURNBLADE (the two bands enjoyed a friendly rivalry, with
WHITE LIGHTNING drummer Jeff Ward having also lent a hand to MOURNBLADE's
recording activities at one point) in the studio environment. When this album
was recorded, a record deal was to prove frustratingly elusive in the first
instance, and so the long-player ('...As Midnight Approaches') initially
appeared (in fairly limited quantities, admittedly) on their own Wild Party
label. It was, overall, a strong and individualistic effort, and it was
interesting to note the inclusion of revamped versions of "Hypocrite"
and "This Poison Fountain" (that have been released earlier in the
form of a 7" single) in addition to a number of unfamiliar tracks. There
was something of a shift towards slightly more mainstream territory in places,
when the band attempted a style more in keeping with RADIO MOSCOW or THE STORM,
but numbers such as "Right Between The Eyes" were very much in the
vein of their first single. The ambitious outfit were keen to get their product
into the hands of as many rock fans as possible, although their limited finances
dictated that a more extensive pressing of the album would be virtually
impossible unless they were picked up by a more affluent company. Things
appeared to be looking up the following year, however, when the group
subsequently became affiliated with the recently-formed GI Records, who issued
two tracks, "Dealer" (a non-LP effort) and "As Midnight
Approaches" (actually an outro taken from a longer album track entitled
"Frightened Children"), on their seldom-seen 'Shooting From The Hip'
compilation. Sadly, though, the label didn't feel compelled to release any
additional WHITE LIGHTNING product (either the original album or a brand-new
follow-up), and things looked fairly ominous in terms of getting further vinyl
releases onto the shelves until the little-known Workshop Records (nothing to do
with LEGEND's own label) stepped in at the last minute to obtain the rights to
the debut album. Much to WHITE LIGHTNING's relief, '...As Midnight Approaches'
was finally reissued (this time in more generous quantities) and the long-player
was soon attracting a significant amount of attention in the music press of the
day.
The re-promoted album received a fairly good review in the likes of
'Kerrang' (who, oddly, suggested influences such as MARILLION and U2), and Tommy
Vance saw fit to playlist various tracks on the 'Friday Rock Show'. The band
also developed quite a following of their own, headlining venues such as the
Marquee in London and playing to packed houses on an increasingly regular basis]

Cry For
Freedom
This US group was formed in Brooklyn, New York, by Mike Tramp (b. Denmark; lead
vocals, ex-Mabel) and Vito Bratta (guitar, ex-Dreamer). After a series of false
starts, they
signed to Elektra Records with Felix Robinson (bass, ex- The Angel) and Dave
Capozzi
(drums) completing the line-up. Fight To Survive surfaced in Japan in 1984. By
this stage,
James LoMenzo and Gregg D'Angelo had taken over bass and drums, respectively, on
a
permanent basis. The album did in fact meet with favourable reviews, some
critics
comparing Mike Tramp to David Lee Roth and Vito Bratta to Eddie Van Halen,
others
likening the songs to those of Europe, Dokken or Journey. Signing to Atlantic
Records,
they released Pride, which developed their own identity, in particular Mike
Tramp's
characteristically watery falsetto style. The album catapulted them from
obscurity to
stardom, climbing to number 11 during its year-long stay on the Billboard album
chart. It
also spawned two US Top 10 hits with "Wait" (number 8, February 1988)
and "When
The Children Cry" (number 3, November 1988). Big Game was the follow-up. It
made
the US charts, peaking at number 19]. £6

WISHBONE ASH: There's The Rub [This legendary British band in
the middle of the 70s played a real Progressive
Hard Rock, and the album "There's the Rub" is their hour of triumph on
that
direction, no doubt. Featuring two lead-guitarists, Wishbone Ash almost never
used keyboards, however their music was rich, innovative and somewhere
even exotic. Formed in the end of the '60s, these guys quickly found their own
unique style - guitar based melodic Hard Rock with a quite
complex
arrangements. Unlike their other albums, "There's the Rub" is the only
fully
progressive work of the band.
Each composition, contains some varied themes and arrangements, brilliant
interplays between both guitarists, supported by an excellent rhythm-section
and clear vocals by Martin Turner. This gem-album is a really great stage for

OF
LUX - [3:14] DELIRIOUS - [3:41] Frank Beard the Drummer kicks massive ass, more
ass
than anyone since John Bonham. The music beingblues-based electric boogie, he
has less
opportunity to show off. Yetevery time he gets a chance for a little fill
between verses, or to
set the beat for ten seconds at the start of a song ("Sleeping Bag"),
he clobbers itwith a
minimum number of maximum thuds, so you think you know what's going on.
Meanwhile,
he's dropping in some strange rhythmic twist, so you don't knowwhat's going on
at all. Dusty
Hill on the Bass does almost nothingexcept pulse. If the drums are going
to be a second lead
instrument, something's got to pulse. Billy Gibbons on the Guitar, unlike
AC/DC,who play the
same old stuff the same old way every time Gibbons recycles old stuff and
semi-new stuff
with new noises without ever losing sight of his ultimate purpose of caving your
head in. Best
song on the album is "Can't StopRockin',"] £4
