evolving and adpating to the times Mottek have covered the crossover terrain with humble
beginnings as a traditional germanic punk outfit ala Neurotic Arseholes/Upright Citizens before
beefing up to the more hardcore approach like the Idiots or Inferno. By the end of the eighties
they had become a power thrash metal outfit more in the vein of Despair or Grinder. While not
the most consistant band in the world Mottek have always been one of the best at what they do
no matter what avenue they chose to presue. So if youre into punk, hardcore and metal you'll be
pleased and surprised with this, their debut release]£4

Mr.MISTER: Go On. [A.O.R LP] £2
*MX MACHINE: Manic Panic [The attitude here is one that I hold dear..."No Glam Fags"...yeah, that's one
of the songs on this album. MX MACHINE really despise the LA glam scene and, as an
act of rebellion, have a lot of fun insulting them in the aforementioned track.. High
intensity, raucously funny, and down-to-earth. Yeah, that's MX MACHINE for you.
Produced by Joey Vera (ARMORED SAINT), MX MACHINE has this serious nuclear
energy that's ready and willing to knock you right through the wall...face first.
According to MX's drummer, Liquid Dan, "We designed this album for the youth of
America. If you're young and pissed off, this is just the total 'get-it-off-your-chest' album".
I tend to agree. The LP cover just rips...got this little rodent kid wearing a batman
sweatshirt and he's wearing this "fuck you" facial expression and shoving a clenched fist
right in your face. Wow. On the back are all these doodles of freaky monsters...real
cool...do an 8-ball and jam to this shit. The lyrics are just plain killin! Be sure to check out
these tracks: "Kick You In The Face", "No Glam Fags", "Fuck The Neighbors", and
"Youth".Deadly music, high-intensity kick-you-in-the-face tonage here, folks...] £6

Rock and Roll Suicide, Thunder in Rock, Fleet Street, Open the Gates, If I'm not loved,

* MYTHRA: Death & Destiny [On Streatbeat Records (No P/S). Mythra built up a following on the North East pub
and club circuit, alongside acts such as Raven, White Spirit, Axe (later Fist), Son of a Bitch
(later Saxon) and Geordie. A self financed EP, Death and Destiny, was released on Guardian
Records in 1979, and proved to be one of the most outstanding records of the era. Their debut
EP was reissued on Street Beat Records to coincide with the band's appearance at the Bingley
Hall festival with Motothead. It, too, sold well and their battle cry of 'Death and Destiny' was
sung by a thousand voices at the aformentioned gig. However, by 1981 their name was absent
from the live listings, leaving the EP to command a high collectors' value and cult reputation.
Metallica fans should track it down to see how much Kill 'Em All owes to this band. "Killer"
(featuring the archetypal NWOBHM riff, although the lads vehemently deny nicking it from
BUDGIE's "Breadfan"), "Overlord" and "UFO" (not to mention the famous title track itself) all
representing absolutely superb examples of energetic, upbeat, heavy NWOBHM with a
respectful nod towards early DIAMOND HEAD, although occasional similarities to the likes
of HOLLOW GROUND, REINCARNATE, JJ'S POWERHOUSE and A II Z can also be
glimpsed at times. Overall, therefore, it's no great surprise that MYTHRA are known to have
had something of an influence on METALLICA's early sound... ] £15

New England's self-titled debut album hit stores in mid-1979 and the group instantly hit
the road as an opening act on Kiss' Dynasty tour. The combination of airplay of the AOR
smash Don't Ever Wanna Lose Ya and massive exposure from extensive touring made
this album one of the years AOR mainstays. Produced by Paul Stanley and Mike Stone,
this ten song collection features numerous Fannon-penned classics such as Don't Ever
Wanna Lose Ya, Nothing To Fear and Shall I Run Away. This foursome combined
influences from Britain and the US to form a sound which combined simple melodies

* 9.0: Too Far Gone [Too Far Gone features guitar-laden metal from guitarist Craig Small and even a
guitar solo on one song (9.0) by Shrapnel Records owner Mike Varney. Another underrated
mainstream rock album from the Shrapnel label sees former Le Mans/Cacophony singer team up
with Paul Gilbert inspired guitarist Craig Small for a very Skid Row influenced record. The songs all
have a commercial tinge, the title track is pretty bombastic and in your face, whilst 'First Of My
Generation' explodes on all cylinders and is perhaps the albums best song. The band come up with
lots of interesting songs with pleanty of musical diversity like on 'Little Sister' and the ballad 'Wish
You Still Were Mine', sometimes the album can get a little bit samey and could use a more forceful
guitar presence from Small, but had the band stayed together to fully realise their potential and
record further albums then they could have flourished into something really special. Check this
album out if you can as is serves up a neat collection of commercial rockers that won't disappoint.

*NIN (NINE INCH NAILS): Head like a Hole [It was 1990's hit "Head Like a Hole," that gave Nine Inch
Nails its commercial foothold. An evocative blend of industrial sonics, pop
conventions, heavy-metal aggression, and dance-club rhythms. 1.Head Like A

Get Better. This is the second album from 1927, the first, now deleted from US catalogs was a major
hit in Australia and Europe. The band was formed from the remains of the early 80's one-hit wonder
group Moving Pictures who had a worldwide hit with the song "What about me"] £3
*NOISEWORKS: Love versus Money [Sony Records Promo Lp. Noiseworks sprang into the spotlight in
Australia with their top ten surprise hit single "No Lies" in 1986. The press dubbed them
an overnight success. What the papers didn't know was that Noiseworks had been busy
paying their dues for five years previous. Vocalist Jon Stevens began his career at 16
when an EMI representative caught Jon singing in a talent contest. After recording a

* NUCLEAR ASSAULT: The Plague [Formed by Danny Lilker after his departure from Anthrax, Nuclear
Assault's sound combined both the hardcore influences of Lilker and John
Connelly with the more metallic styles of Anthony Bramante and Glenn Evans,
accentuated by Connelly's rather unique whiney (yet effective) vocal style.
Lilker's later bands are well-documented elsewhere, while both Evans and
Connelly have had solo projects in the past (C.I.A. and Nuclear Theory,
respectively). Songs: 1.Game Over - (instrumental) 2 Nightmares 3 Butt F**k

* OFFENBACH: Never Too Tender [A&M '76 Canada. Great Canadian progressive heavy rock / AOR
quartet. Gatefold sleeve. 1-Never too tender (4 min 15 sec) 2-Running away (4 min 11
sec) 3-Balls and rods (2 min 52 sec) 4-Edgar (5 min 46 sec) 5-Love in vain (3 min 14 sec)
6-Sad song (when I'm really down) (4 min 54 sec) 7-Every day I get the blues (5 min 10
sec) 8-High down (3 min 50 sec). Offenbach's heavy blues-rock sound made it one of the
province's most popular rock bands in the late 1970's and early '80s. Although most of their
work was in French, Offenbach made an English language LP, "Never Too Tender," in
1976 and toured across the country. Boulet became a successful solo artist after Offenbach's
demise, winning two Felix awards, the Quebec recording industry's equivalent of a Grammy]

*ONSLAUGHT: Shellshock [England's Onslaught existed through the mid to late 80's without ever quite
securing a permenant lead singer or making a huge impact on the music world, even
though they were a great band! On this one, which proved to be their last release, the band
recruited Grim Reaper's Steve Grimmett for the vocal department and proceeded to write
and record a fairly decent piece of work. With a guitar sound reminiscient of Metallica's
Master of Puppets era and melodies that remind me a bit of Anthrax, Onslaught rumbled
through the songs with a sense of reasonable execution. Should appeal to anyone with an
interest in the late 80's thrash scene. Watch out for the excellent Angelwitch cover
"Confused"] £8
* ORION THE HUNTER: S/T [Orion The Hunter was a spinoff of the band Boston. The band was formed
by former Boston guitarist Barry Goudreau in the early 1980s and consisted of
Goudreau on lead guitar, Fran Cosmo on lead vocals, Bruce Smith on bass, and
Mike DeRosier, formerly of Heart, on drums. The Orion The Hunter album
featured the hit "So You Run," which pushed the album to #57 on the Billboard
chart. The band's short existence was probably caused by Goudreau's ongoing
problems with the band Boston, in which he sued guitarist Tom Scholz, only to
settle out of court] £10
*OUTSIDE EDGE: Running Hot £10
*OVERKILL: Taking Over [Track List • Deny The Cross • Wrecking Crew • Fear His Name • Use Your
Head • Fatal If Swallowed • Powersurge • In Union We Stand • Electro-Violence • Overkill
II (The Nightmare --Continues).
Kicking off with the brutal riffing of "Deny The Cross", the band make it obvious that in no way have they compromised, if anything they've got heavier! "Wrecking Crew" is next, the best song on side one, with brilliant guitar work from Bobby Gustafson. Powerful rifferama as always, and a great solo which rips the speakers to tatters. Mr. Gustafson pisses all over most of the so-called guitar heroes, most of whom can't write a song to save their lives. But no way are OVERKILL a one-man band, the crunching rhythms are an essential part of their sound and are ably provided by D.D. Verni on bass and Rat Skates on drums.
"Fear His Name" and "Use Your Head" are next up, both good songs delivered strongly, the latter featuring the great chorus line "You, you've got a lot to learn, you heads up your ass!" Great! The last song on side one is a re-recorded version of "Fatal If Swallowed" from their EP of a couple of years ago, and this is a far superior version.
Over on to side two, "Powersurge" has a catchy chorus and a great bass intro while "Electro-Violence" has some speedy riffing and shouted backing vocals. But vocalist Bobby "Blitz" Ellsworth has such a distinctive voice that when combined with the guitar of Gustafson it gives OVERKILL their own sound which makes them one of the few bands that are instantly recognizeable. "In Union We Stand" is a classic chant in the style of JUDAS PRIEST's "Take On The World", but this is done so much better. Ellsworth's voice does let him down a bit on this but it's such a good song it hardly matters. My favourite track one the first album was "Overkill", and on here it"s "Overkill II", in the same vein as part one. This song is so powerful it's frightening. From the doomy gothic intro, through the classic chorus with it's brilliantly melodic guitar hook, to the acoustic guitar on the fadeout, this song says everything about the band. As the song says, "The nightmare continues"! FULLY SIGNED BY ALL BAND MEMBERS] £18

* PALLAS: The Wedge [Their sound is tight, their musical ideas are flawlessly formed and they have good
ideas. They are reminiscent of Rush with their science-fiction-oriented lyrics and their
eccentric rhythms. Where others try to fall into a certain prog category, or do their very best
not to fall in any category at all, this band simply made the music they wanted to make. Pallas
do not forget the rock even when it is progressive. Call me a romantic, but I think music has to
move you, it must have some kind of life in it, you must be able to feel it. It must be made with
passion. And it is this combination of highly melodic and symphonic rock and music with a
soul, that makes Pallas unique] £10

*Jeff PARIS: Wired Up [Melodic Rock album featuring more hooks than a fisherman’s tackle box.
Inspired many a band’s songwriting style but most notably Vixen on their S/T debut when
they covered 3 songs featured on this album. Jeff Paris has become best known for his
songwriting with people such as Mr. Big, Vixen and Alias but he's also released
three albums in his own right. Vixen covered no less than four songs from "Race To
Paradise" and "Wired Up" taking "Cryin'" into the American Top 20. If you're looking
for classic AOR with big hooks look no further 1. Saturday Nite 2. One Night Alone 3.

* PARKER: Black Dog £3
* PENDRAGON: The Jewel [Pendragon's first full-length studio release could serve as the model for the
stereotypical "neo-prog" album. Clive Nolan hadn't joined the band yet, but I enjoy Rik's
keyboard work on this album. His leads are tasty and melodic. It complements Nick's
guitar well. Nick's guitar playing is typical of neo-prog, in a Genesis kinda way with
crystally arpeggios, fuzzy power chords, melodic leads. The compositions are around six
minutes long, give or take a few. There's a pretty energetic "rock" tendency that I believe
has pretty much disappeared from their music. Themes come and go and develop at a
comfortable pace, nothing too jarring or lagging. They're not horribly complex or intense,
but there's quite a bit of interplay between the keyboards and guitar, and the melodies are
nice enough to keep me interested. Points of comparison here are Genesis (circa Duke), a
little Marillion, and a helping of Rush from around that time. If you're into quality neo-
prog, I recommend giving this a try.
Nick Barrett, vocals, guitars; Rik Carter, keyboards; Peter Gee, basses, guitars, bass
pedals; Nigel Harris, drums, percussion
Tracklist:
1. Higher Circles — 3:29 (a very progressive song with the typical Pendragon guitar sound and
the more typical Nick Barrett vocals).
2. The Pleasure of Hope — 3:43 (a more romantic song with a melancholic approach)
3. Leviathan — 6:13 (This is the all-time Pendragon fans favourite and is still played at their concerts
nowadays).
4. Alaska — 8:39 (Alaska is divided in two pieces At Home With The Earth and Snowfall. It is one of my
all-time favourites; very good keyboards and a very good composition)
5. Circus — 6:34 (a very dramatic song with great instrumental parts and breaks)
6. Oh Divineo — 6:51
7. The Black Knight — 9:57 (Pendragon's masterpiece and is still loved by Pendragon and progrock lovers
nowadays !)
8. Fly High Fall Far — 4:56
9. Victims of Life — 6:53
total time 57:15] £13
* PENDRAGON: Fly High, Fall Far (84) [Fly High Fall Far is a very agressive prog rock song with great
tempo breaks and outstanding keyboards by Rik Carter. Victims Of Life is a very melodic
instrumental piece with superb guitar parts and again a lot of tempo breaks in the song !
Dark Summer's Day later appeared on the 9:15 Live album. Excalibur is an instrumental
piece with a very nice keyboard sound in which Pendragon shows their skills, I think this
is the song with the most authentic Pendragon sound of all !] £11
* PENDRAGON: Saved by You [Saved By You is just killer with a chorus that sticks to your mind for
weeks. Next song is a very Genesis a-like song Lady Luck, which I think has been
written after the KowTow album, together with Chase The Jewel and Elephants Never
Grow Old. Chase The Jewel is a long uptempo song with great breaks while Elephants
Never Grow Old shows the more balladish side of Pendragon. Fully signed by all band
members] £10

*POSSESSED: Seven Churches [This was the first true Death Metal outfit. In 1984, POSSESSED along
with DEATH were of the first Metal bands who fit into this category. I was always awed by
their ferocious energy and dark, relentless style. Seven Churches contains ten brutally heavy
well-written tracks. Who can forget unholy tracks like "The Exorcist", "Pentagram",
"Burning In Hell", "Fallen Angel", "Satan's Curse" and the immortal "Death Metal"?
Possessed were really ahead of their time. This record was recorded while band members
Mike Torrao, Mike Sus, Jeff Becerra and Larry Lalonde (who would later joined Blind
Illusion + Primus) were still in high school. Few can argue that the band were not in touch
with the darkest side of the scene and had a firm grasp on the chemistry that would one day
lead us to this glorious and flourishing scene of uncompromising brutality. Possessed had a
huge impact on the death/black metal scene and their influence can still be heard today.
Little did these four young guys know that this album would shape what would become the
Death Metal genre. It's scope of importance in Metal is limitless. If you've been around a
while and don't have this one, shame on you! Its an essential historical component to
anyone chronicling the evolution of Death Metal. Buy it if you don't mind the fact that the
picture sleeve cover is missing] £8
*POSSESSED: The Eyes of Horror EP [Following their superb "Beyond The Gates" LP, "The Eyes of
Horror" is pretty damn rippin'. The overall production falls somewhere between "Beyond
The Gates" and their debut release, "Seven Churches", although how much can it hurt on an
album like this? But I can get into this... Not quite as obvious as something as, say old
VENOM (who I like for the pure extremity of their genre) and in that sense, somewhat
classier, too. There aren't any surprises here...but would you want any? Nahh, this shit rocks
pretty hard. Buy it if you don't mind the fact that the picture sleeve cover is missing] £6
PRINCESS PANG: S/T [ Remember the anthem “Trouble in Paradise”? Yes, this L.P is full of quality
sleazy, street Hard Rock. This New York-based rock quintet was formed in 1986 around
the nucleus of Jeni Foster (vocals), Ronnie Roze (bass) and Brian Keats (drums). The
line-up was finally completed a year later by the addition of guitarists Jay Lewis and
Andy Tyernon. Signing to Metal Blade Records, they were introduced to Ron St.
Germain (of Bad Brains fame) who eventually handled the production of their debut.
Released in 1989, it was a gutsy hard rock album, full of tales of New York's low-life.
Foster, with her aggressive delivery, drew comparisons to Guns N' Roses' Axl Rose,
though the band failed to capitalize on the attentive press they received.] £4

QUARTZ: Stand Up And Fight [The name of Birmingham Metallers Quartz is now synonymous with the legendary
NWOBHM movement. Quartz are rooted in the industrial hotbed that gave vent to so many world status
acts. Indeed, Mike Hopkins’ act Way Of Life, pre Quartz, featured no less than a pre Zeppelin John
Bonham on drums. Prior to their 1st album, the band had already proven their mettle with the single
releases & tours supporting AC/DC & Black Sabbath. The Sabbath connection proved a useful ally.
Sabbath’s tour manager Albert Chapman took over the business reins whilst guitarist Tony Iommi lent
his skills to producing the band. Even Queen guitarist Brian May handled lead on 1 track. Keyboard
player Geoff Nichols joined Black Sabbath later on.
Songs: Stand up and fight, Charlie Snow, Can't say no to you, Revenge, Stoking up the fires of hell, Rock
'n' roll child, Questions, Wildfire + Insert sheet] £13
* QUEEN: II [Gatefold. Queen's sophomore album was loathed by critics, who accuse it of being too "art-rock", and
loved by many fans. The truth is that, while it is Queen's most fantasy-oriented and ornate album, Queen
II is simply beautiful music. While some of their '70s contemporaries may have attempted similar forays
into fantastic medievalism, Queen went all the way, and came up with music as grand as the subject
matter. For example, "Father To Son" is filled with the hard rock equivalents of trumpets heralding a
new king. Even when the song ventures into more blues-based heavy rock territory, Queen doesn't let
up the intesity. Gentle ballads ("Nevermore") and grinding metal ("Ogre Battle") coexist without
sounding out of place. The epic "March of the Black Queen" must have given rock critics fits, with its
defiance of pop song structures and its over the top theatrics. This album delivers excess and then some.
The stunning guitar harmonies and vocal overdubs are fantastic. The band even completely refurbished
"Seven Seas of Rhye" from their debut, and made it into an actual song with vocals. For fans of straight-
forward bluesy rock, there's "See What A Fool I've Been" (which could almost be one of AC/DC's slow,
moody numbers) and the heavy rock of "The Loser In the End". Although it may be a bit much for some,
I find this album to be simply incredible] £24
* QUEEN: Sheer Heart Attack [The inevitable commercial breakthrough occured for Queen with the clever pop of
"Killer Queen". The song reflected a new approach for the band: a little less medieval melodramatics, a
little more humor, but still retaining the basic mix of musical theater, heavy rock and pop. The album's
structure expanded upon an approach toyed with on Queen II: the use of an almost "medley-like" song
flow, in which songs wouldn't just end, but sort of trailed off into a new song. Interesting points in the
album include "Bring Back Leroy Brown", which signaled an interest by the band in using traditional
genres such as ragtime, and "In the Lap of the Gods...Revisited", a prime example of the Queen power
ballad. "Stone Cold Crazy" showcased the band's more frantic, heavier side, while "Now I'm Here", with
its call and response sections, would prove to be a concert favorite] £8
* QUEEN: A Night At The Opera [Great Gatefold album. Although best known for the classic rock staple
"Bohemian Rhapsody" (and you may as well admit it; as overplayed as "Rhapsody" may be, it's infinitely
more fun to sing along with this song's "wall of vocals" opera section and bang your head to the hard
rock rant which follows than it is to hear "Stairway To Heaven" for the three-millionth time) and the pop
charmer "You're My Best Friend", A Night At The Opera has more to offer than the casual listener may
be aware of. Riding a tide of increasing success, Queen did what current mainstream rock bands are
often unable to do: create an album which not only has hit pop songs, but minimizes filler and
maximizes quirkiness and variety in songwriting. Broadway-style rock is still utilized by Queen to its
bitchy maximum ("Death On Two Legs"), while the band's use of musical styles from the earlier part of
the 20th century continues to delight the listener with its outrageous dandiness ("Lazing On A Sunday
Afternoon", "Seaside Rendezvous", "Good Company"). Queen cohort and producer Roy Thomas Baker
pulls off the impossible, creating a lush soundscape which manages to retain catchiness without losing
any of the band's epic vision. This vision harkens back to their earlier approach with songs such as the
dreamlike "'39" and "The Prophet's Song", which features Asian sounds, heavy guitar work and an
incredible, dizzying vocal tour-de-force utilizing stereo imaging and dead-on harmonies. "I'm In Love
With My Car" is a great, traditional hard-rocker penned by drummer Roger Taylor. And if you fancy
yourself a fan of hard rock, but have yet to hear Queen's tongue-in-cheek signature song "Bohemian
Rhapsody" at some point, you'd better emerge from the bomb shelter you've been hiding in for the past
few decades. ] £8
QUEEN: A Day At The Races [Great Gatefold album. Although some may accuse Queen of trying to merely copy
the successful formula of A Night At The Opera with this album, I prefer to think of it as an inevitable
extension of their unique approach. True, the band has continued to access a "foppish" element in their
music, which calls to mind elaborate parties at luxurious villas (particularly in "The Millionaire Waltz").
However, the songs are not mere rehashes of songs from the previous album. Instead, Queen presents
hushed torch-song dramatics ("You Take My Breath Away"), surprisingly authentic-sounding gospel-rock
"Somebody To Love"), raucous low-brow hard rock ("Tie Your Mother Down"), and one of Queen's
trademark power ballads ("Teo Torriatte"). Beautiful vocals, elaborate song-writing and Brian May's
trademark guitar choirs (which are especially effective in the intro to "Tie Your Mother Down" and the
outro to "Teo Torriatte")] £6
QUEEN: Jazz [Original gatefold LP with inserts] £6
* QUEEN: News of the world [Great Gatefold album. With News of the World, Queen decided to start making a
change in their musical style by opting for a somewhat more straightforward approach to their songs.
This meant cutting back on the elaborate guitar orchestration and the epic sweep of their songwriting.
The question was, what will the "new" Queen sound like, and will it be forced and mundane or will it
continue to reflect the "Queen ethos", but with a new stylistic bent? Thankfully, News of the World
delivered the goods, with plenty of panache and natural feel. "We Will Rock You/We Are the
Champions" provided a matched pair of hits (a driving, hard rock singalong and an over-the-top power
ballad which are now almost always played back-to-back, as if they are two parts of the same song).
"Sheer Heart Attack" was Queen's surprisingly effective take on Heavy Metal. "Who Needs You" is a
Latin-flavored soft-rock number, while "It's Late" evokes some of Rod Stewart's more rock 'n roll efforts.
"Sleeping On the Sidewalk" is an energetic, blues-styled critique of the music business, while "Fight
>From the Inside" and "Get Down, Make Love" hint at the controversial dabblings in disco which the
band would later engage in. While not a breathtaking album, News of the World is certainly a more
successful example of a band changing its direction] £9

RAGE: Secrets In A Weird World. [the top album of this German-Hellenic band. Unlike their previous album
"Perfect Man", Secrets was considerably slowed down and drenched in more metal guitar than the lean,
mean speed assault of "Perfect Man". Manni Schmidt's guitar is double (maybe triple) tracked throughout,
often swirling and attacking with several angles. With the exception of "She", every song on here is
memorable and worth listening through. The album relies on good metal songs instead. "Distant Voices" is
one of the best, with a strong chorus. "Make My Day" is very aggressive and driving. The nine minute long
"Without a Trace" explores mysteries of the world (hence the album's title), showing some of the interest in
sci-fi topics Peavey has shown throughout the years. I would refer to Secrets as the pinnacle of Rage's
ahievements. Songs: 1. Intro 2. Time waits for noone 3. Make my day 4. The Inner search 5. Invisible
horizons 6. She 7. Light into the darkness 8. Talk to Grandpa 9. Distant voices 10. Without a trace 11. Lost

RECKLESS: Reckless [Why this band didn't do better at the time still remains a mystery to me. There are some
absolute pearlers on this their first album, produced by the very talented Paul Gross. I remember the
buzz Reckless got in the UK media during the summer of 1981. 'The next big thing', according to the
AOR scribes of the time, namely Paul Suter and Geoff 'Def' Barton. Unfortunately Reckless had to
compete with some very good albums at the time. However, the strength of this album lies in the solid
melodic overtones permeating right throughout. 'Victims Of Time', 'Ready For Action', 'Reckless', and
'Searching For A Dream' are near classics. 12 tracks all up makes for some fairly spectacular listening,
considering this dates back to 1981. Jan Melanson - Vocals; Steve Madden - Guitars; Gene Stout -
Bass (Lee Aaron, Michael White); Gil Roberts - Drums Word of warning. If you see their other album
'Heart Of Steel' ignore it altogether. It's rubbish, and doesn't feature Jan Melanson. Unfortunately it's
only this latter one which has just been released on CD. Why bother with this one and not the debut??]

RUSH: S/T [good-natured Zeppelinesque hard rock romp, with odes to post-labor beer drinking ("Working Man"),
babes ("Need Some Love"), beer-inflicted depression ("Here Again"), more babes ("In the Mood"), and
politics-lite ("What You're Doing"). The fade-in intro to "Finding My Way" is an apt metaphor for how
the original Rush lineup (with competent drummer John Rutsey at the time) used an independent-label,
DIY approach to gradually gain both US listenership and big-label interest. Rock on] £8
RUSH: Fly by Night [John Rutsey's diabetes and differing ideas for musical directions led him to leave the band.
Enter Neil Peart, one of rock's finest drummers, and a good lyricist to boot. Suddenly, Rush's sophomore
effort surprises the listener with Objectivist-influenced lyrics meshed with harsher sonics ("Anthem"),
percussive/rhythmic tour de force pieces ("Beneath, Between & Behind), intelligent Album Oriented Rock
("Fly By Night"), and the first of their multi-layered, multi-sectioned epics, "By-Tor and the Snow Dog".
Geddy Lee's voice is quite high-pitched, but still sounds "natural", as opposed to glam-metal falsetto. You'll
also find dominant, wide-register bass-work (which somehow still maintains a semblance of keeping the
song's skeleton together). Alex Lifeson's guitar playing is quite organic, and uses a lot of full chords, as well
as suspended, dreamy voicings. Peart? Oh man, his drumming is quite exciting, and busy] £8

RUSH: Permanent Waves [Classic!! When Rush stepped into the 80s they began their transformation from a heady,
quasi-prog rock band to a more technologically sequestered group, Permanent Waves became their
transitional album. Gone were the epic, full side songs such as "2112" or "Hemispheres". Though certain
tracks like "Natural Science" were still rather lengthy and ambitious, the trio learned a bit about honing their
excessive traits into a more digestible style. Permanent Waves also hinted more strongly at the eventual use
of keyboards, synthesizers and sequencers in their music, though Alex Lifeson still played a prominent
guitar role on the album. But as "Spirit of the Radio" and "Freewill" showed, the band was a lot more
interested in writing songs that threw out some of the dross and excess for songs that could be heard and
remembered like other rock anthems of the day. And more importantly, Geddy Lee was shedding the falsetto
of the 70s for a much more palatable singing voice.Overall, has proven to be an overwhelming Rush. There
are some songs that I find particularly exciting, namely "Entre Nous" and "Freewill", the ambitious "Natural
Science" is a wonderful inclusion in the Rush Epic Song Catalogue. Another great song is "Different
Strings", a more somber and quiet number that features rare Geddy Lee lyrics. "Jacob's Ladder" is a riffy
epic number that on some occasions proves to be a bit cumbersome and on others is a good treat.
Permanent Waves is probably one of the few albums that appeals to both fans of the older 70s Rush and fans
who enjoy their 80s synth phase] £6
RUSH: Moving Pictures [Classic!! One of those albums that just makes you go wow. Rush was slowly introducing
keyboards, bass pedals, and sequencers into the mix and this was one of their best demonstrations of the
latest technology. "Tom Sawyer" opens the album, "Red Barchetta" a futuristic story of a boy and an
outlawed gas automobile going on a joyride is one of my favorite Rush songs ever. "YYZ" is another great
Rush instrumental, with a killer bass line (Geddy is one of the best). "The Camera Eye" is the epic track, but
it moves differently than any of their previous long songs. Rather than piecing together distinctly different
segments under one title, this song maintains a flow throughout. Then you have "Witch Hunt", which builds
into a slow climax. And the whole thing ends with "Vital Signs", implementing sequencers and displaying
great song movement]£3
RUSH: Signals [One of the best 10 albums of all time. Very powerful stuff. BUY! If any one album every
completely and totally recruited me into the Rush cult, Signals is that very album. Upon finding it, I
proceeded to listen to it nearly every day for weeks on end and to this day I still find it to be one of
their finest moments as a band. Here you get one of the best pieces of Rush's work in their
recording history. It probably helps to have a wonderful album opener such as "Subdivisions",
which features a great usage of keyboards as well as some darned pointed lyrics. "The Analog Kid"
is possibly a refugee from the previous two Rush albums, still using their style from Permanent
Waves and Moving Pictures with some synth washes in the chorus. Also has one of the best drum
performances in the history of music. "Chemistry" is a fairly clever lyrical number. "The Weapon"
is a very powerful number, while the follow-up, "New World Man", seems to be the song most
people remember from this album. "Losing It" is a slower number regarding the affects of age on
talented people. The album closes out with "Countdown", which is a tribute to the launch of the first
space shuttle, complete with sampled recordings from Houston and the cockpit of the Columbus.
The interplay between synthesizer, guitar and the rhythm section is particularly solid throughout. If
you don't own this one, don't call yourself a music fan] £6
*RUSH: New World Man £6
RUSH: Grace Under Pressure [One of my favorite Rush albums is this jagged, disturbing gem from the mid-80's.
This time the keyboards are even more prominent, with sequenced-sounding synth. Surprisingly, Alex's
guitar makes a huge comeback, and balances the keyboards out with huge, chorused, delayed sweeps of
sound, and taut, nightmarish solos. "Afterimage" is a paean to a departed friend of the band, and has both
palm-muted single note lines (verses), and brilliant chordal screaming (middle break). "Red Sector A"
gallops along on a ruthless, sequenced bass synth pulse, and U2 meets Zeppelin washes of six-string
paranoia. "Between the Wheels" features one of Alex's greatest guitar solos. This album also saw the
development of a Rush-ism: guitar/real bass dominated verse, keyboard/synth-bass dominated chorus. A
masterpiece] £7
RUSH : The Big Money 12" +Territories +Red Sector A (LIVE) [GODS!!!!] £5
RUSH: Subdivisions 12" £7
* RUSH: Countdown [Spirit of Radio + Interview on the B side. Fantastic cover] £7
RUSH: Hold Your Fire [Hold Your Fire had one major thing going for it: the songs are good to great throughout.
"Force Ten" is undeniably a classic Rush track, complete with a major mood shift for the chorus and very
wide open atmospheric affects. "Time Stand Still" is the poppiest and probably the most radio friendly song
of the album. "Open Secrets" is a floating, pondering number that contains some very good lyrics from Neil
Peart. At this point Peart was rock solid on introspective lyrics and this here is one of his better examples.
Meanwhile, the music underneath is expansive and moving. The most upbeat song of the album (and the
only one where bass really gets a mod) is "Turn the Page". Overall, the production on Hold Your Fire takes
the band into a territory started with Power Windows. The sound is immense and still allows a lot of space
for musical notes to breathe and stretch out. This is one contender for a Rush classic]£7
* RUSH: Time Stand Still £7
RUSH: Presto, was again a shift in direction for the trio, this time going for a more back to the basics approach. For
whatever reason, the band decided to place the keyboard racks in the garage and opted for a style that
reminded them that yes, Alex Lifeson indeed played guitars and was a pretty snappy guitarist to boot. The
band takes the listener through a maze of moods and tempos throughout, from the moodiness of "The Pass"
to a more fanciful approach on the title track] £7
*RUSH: Rock Sagas [The Chris Tetley interview. Picture disc, still factory sealed] £7
